The unknown officer: If both epaulettes would have "bouillons" then he would be a colonel, not a major It seems to me that his left epaulette is with bouillons (à grosses torsades) whereas his right one was a contre-épaulette where the fringes were repainted later. So by the time of the execution of this painting the man would have been a Stabshauptmann. BTW the Faber du Faur sketch showing Bürgi as a completely different man.
