The need to publish a comprehensive work presenting the iconography of the Polish army uniform has existed for a long time. The Polish Army Museum felt obliged to fulfill this task, having a rich iconographic archive and rich collections. The encouragement for this work and the beginning of activities in this area was the transfer to the Museum of the Polish Army of photographic negatives of a valuable uniformed work by Colonel Bronisław Gembarzewski (1872–1941), the director of the Army Museum before 1939.
This work contained 1346 drawings and watercolours, depicting several figures of Polish Army soldiers in different historical periods, as well as a manuscript of texts, including explanatory texts and source extracts. The original work burned down in 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising. Therefore, no trace of this work would have remained if it had not been photographed in its entirety in 1942. The photographic copy, in the form of several dozen small-picture films, hidden in a soldered metal box, was buried during the Nazi occupation at Śniadeckich Street in Warsaw. During the evacuation of the population after the fall of the uprising in 1944, Dr. Bronisław Bartnicki took the box out of Warsaw. In 1958, a photographic copy of the work stored in this way was handed over to the management of the Polish Army Museum for publication. This was in accordance with the intentions of the author, who dedicated his work to the Polish Army (excerpt. Preface to the first volume).
